I'm a female, 53 year old gamer (have played Warcraft for almost 8 years now, along with various other games). I am friendly, not shy and very low drama. I think I'm lucky in that I've never experienced sexual harassment over vent (probably because most of the guilds I've been in had several women, so guys were used to us talking over vent). However if pugging, and they are really disgusting or rude - I have no problem telling them over vent to knock it off. (But I have that "Mom" tone of voice I can wield when they annoy me and it normally works!) I have found over the years though that male players will behave themselves now much more then they used to. The exception to this is guilds that are predominately military men... who are deployed. Their phrases to each other are DISGUSTING, but still, they usually tone it down (or try to) once they realize I'm female and it makes me uncomfortable. I can see how a shy female, or one who is not familiar with some of the gross things guys say to each other, would be upset.

I completely agree. In the Drama Mamas I linked, we said that guilds need to have rules against harassment in chat and that they need to be followed.

And yes, drama queens can be male too. In fact, I think that more males cause drama than females because there are so many hitting on females and then reacting poorly when rejected. But the females usually get blamed.

Why aren't we focusing on the problem of men being inappropriate? In a video game, where there's levels of meritocracy and player-run power, why aren't we scolding, shaming, or tossing dudes who harass women or do these things on voice chat out of our guilds? It's probably because a lot of people think this is OK behaviour.

Women shouldn't have to stay out of voice chat, we should not be harassing them or treating them differently in the first place. I feel comfortable being on voice chat with my guild, but whenever I speak up on other guild's voice chats, there's always that risk that someone will crack a joke, or say something shitty or bring up that I'm a GIRL ON MUMBLE/VENT!111 when it shouldn't be like that. We should be slapping the hands of dudes who do this sort of thing.

Also, the drama queens you mention? Guys don't get called or picked out for doing this, and yet they do. This isn't a woman-specific thing.

it never gets easy. We lost one of ours a couple of years back. Two weeks ago we adopted another, we now have a housefull of 5 (ranging from 9 weeks to 15 years). They all get hugs, all the time.

Yes, we are mad :-)

*hugs* I have a little girl that I'm just crazy about. I can only imagine how much losing her would hurt.
But it's sort of nice in a nostalgic way to find reminders of him.

Aw... That would totally have left me a weepy little blob. Sometimes I find myself thinking of a dog we inherited when I use wooden circulars. He sure loved the taste of bamboo. I'm gonna go find some kitties to squish now. We've got four so I shouldn't have to look too hard.
