… and I’m not entirely sure why.

Note: If you haven’t figured out by the whole “ending” part in the title, this post is going to contain lots of spoilers. You have been warned. But really … duh.

Andy gets the job she wanted with Miranda’s help, so it’s not like a huge sacrifice is made. And having integrity is definitely better than success. Yes, good theme. So why am I so angry?

I think part of it is that Miranda’s stabbing Nigel in the back was considered to be the very same thing as Andy choosing to not get fired and go to Paris instead of Emily, who had been nothing but heinous previous to this. It is hardly the same thing. Choosing to keep the investment in the position (Miranda is the one who chose Andy over Emily) just isn’t the same thing as actively spending weeks backstabbing a colleague and supposed friend. OK, so that’s one thing. But it’s not the big thing, I don’t think.

I think what really ticks me off, is that the movie is saying that as a woman, you can either have a career or a happy life. I know Nigel said that, meaning both genders, but really the point is driven home later that strong women are considered evil and strong men are considered normal. I know this is the case in real life. I guess I want my movie women to have it all, as unrealistic as it is. Still, this movie kind of condones it. It kind of says that Andy should have stayed home with the boyfriend who didn’t understand rather than go to Paris and take advantage of opportunities. And it says that Miranda deserved to lose another husband, if she is just going to try to enjoy her life anyway.

Yeah, I’m perturbed because some impressionable young woman is going to watch the movie and give up a dream job to stay with the boyfriend who ends up cheating on her 2 weeks/months/years/decades later. And then she is going to realize she’s blown an opportunity all because she went with the romantic choice rather than the smart choice. The fact is that Mr. Right is going to be understanding during a rough beginning of a career or else he just isn’t Mr. Right. And you should never throw away your dreams for anyone, particularly someone who isn’t Mr. Right … who wouldn’t want you to throw your dreams anyway … so make that never period.

Alright, I guess I’ve worked it all out so I can go to bed.

Next day edit: I liked the movie up until the end and Meryl Streep is a goddess.

HA!

Hey Robin,
Betcha didn’t think i was gonna write “from the road” didja? Huh huh? I am comandeering Dad’s wonderful laptop while he is doing other things… and trying to decide how many of the LYSs listed in the Glendale area actually still exist… and then how many of them i can get to in the matter of a few hours. Hee.

No pics todaybecause #1: I didn’t bring my camera… and #2 I can’t figure out how to dl pics from Dad’s camera to this ‘puter. I got lots of action shots of him dancing wearing… the Kilt Hose Toppers that i made for him! Yes. My Dad does Scottish Country dancing, which is a bit like square dancing, though a bit older I would guess. His group had a big shin-dig last night and i got to go watch (no thank you, my two left foots have been declared dangerous, and are not allowed too close to other dancing feet). Too fun!

Oh and I think we’re finally going to go see the new HP movie today. Yay!

Can’t wait to see ya tomorrow!
Later,
Kate

Hey Kate!

There are many times I wish I had that time-thingy Hermione had. But I don’t. So I end up getting nothing done but work and sleep, and not much of that. Yesterday, however, I was able to fit in a little mommy time and that of course means feeding my yarn addiction.

And during work I was able to work on my purse a bit:

And I had a breakthrough on my sock! Ok, I know it doesn’t look like much, but I don’t think I’ll be frogging it again. I had been casting on two kneedles because I cast on so tightly and she said to cast on very loosely in that tutorial. And the stitches just fall right off my shiny, new kneedles. So last night I cast on using just one kneedle and tried really hard to just be loose and now I am actually on row 2!

And of course I had to play with my new yarn. So I started to swatch on #9 kneedles.

And I have to say that my love affair with the Boye Interchangeable kneedle set is now officially over. The #1, 2 and 3 kneedles are all smaller than the join, which is just criminal. How do you sell those three sizes in your kit if they can’t be used? And the small length of cord that I’m using above is so stiff that it is hard to get the kneedles together. Grawr!

And the look on Emme’s face tells you what she thinks of the case.

The yarn is so lovely though. I hope one ball is enough to make a hat.

Later,

Robin

P.S. *This movie is a bit of fun to stitch and weep to.
